California Flashback

In honor of heading up to NorCal for Wine Country Curling's Crush bonspiel this weekend, I thought it'd be a good time to hop in the ol' DeLorean and share a promo clip for the SFBACC straight from the 80s. If you've curled in California at all, you'll probably recognize some faces. You can spot Jerome Larson, the Johnny Appleseed of Curling, calling some shots, but the highlight is a youthful Dave Peck. While he's not wearing his trademark kerchief,  he is rocking the turtle neck (I bet it's a dickie).

What's Your Number?

One of the cooler trends in curling right now is jersey numbers. Being a sports fan, I'm used to seeing numbers on player's backs. It helps to identify them when you're watching from the stands and makes it feel kind of bigger, more grand. Plus, it just looks rad.

So far, at least two high profile squads are sporting numbers this year, the Murdoch and Gushue rinks, as well as USA star Chris Plys.

Team Murdoch shared this via Twitter this morning. 17 is a solid choice. Curious as to the story behind it for Murdoch. Mostly, love the bold font choice. Feels very European.

New for 2011: Olson

Last year Olson introduced their new line of curling shoes that added some color to the otherwise drab world of curling shoes. While they don't have anything drastically new this year, their catalog features some sweet photography.

Hot Trailer: Kong Curling

Last year we tipped you off to a new curling movie that was being shot in Norway. Well, the movie has been shot and will come out next month. It's called Kong Curling (or Curling King, or King of Curling in English).

Check out the trailer below.

Cockfighting and Curling

Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard is prepared for an NBA lockout. You'd be surprised at how many players live paycheck to paycheck, so it's nice to see a player of Howard's stature have a contingency plan if basketball doesn't come back.

More Football and Curling!

Last year I said no more football posts, but when football and curling collide, as they're wont to do, I have to share.
It seems my team, the 49ers, just keep getting into curling. In 2009 tight end Vernon Davis gave it a shot and became a bit of an ambassador for the sport, serving as honorary captain of the US team in Vancouver. This year, after Jim Harbaugh signed on as coach, the team had a charity fundraiser and did some outdoor curling. That was enough to get me excited about this season.

Natural Born Curlers of Chilly Beach

Deep in the recesses of Canada and early oughts Flash animation comes Chilly Beach. This webshow about a Canadian "resort" town located on an icy tundra way up north made the leap to full on CBC show, which is admirable, but it still has the look, voice acting and writing of a Flash e-card.

They did an episode on curling.  When a local Scotsman takes over ice duties on the hockey rink, he turns it into a pristine sheet of curling ice. He invites his family out from Scotland to revel in his creation, but soon remembers why he left home to begin with. The local hockey goofs aren't too keen on curling, but reluctantly get drawn into a match at the risk of losing limbs.
